Happy New Year from all of us here at The Chillery! It’s the start of a brand new year, and this time, a brand new decade. Amidst reflecting on the events of 2019 and setting our intentions for the year 2020, here’s a look at what we believe this year in wellness is going to be all about.
1. Mental health: keeping up the conversation
There’s been lots of great work done in recent years to break the taboo surrounding mental health, and the mental health conversation looks set to continue in 2020. From the work of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Sussex on the Heads Together initiative to challenges such as RED January - which supports mental health through exercise - there are lots of great causes to get behind in the name of promoting better mental health and helping people feel able to talk about it.
According to NHS Digital, one in six people aged between 16 and 64 has problems with their mental health at any given time, and women are most likely to be affected. It’s now often talked about in conjunction with words like “crisis” and “epidemic”, and the rise of mental health problems among children and young people is of particular concern.
Mental health problems come in many guises, with a huge range of potential symptoms that mean that even the same overarching condition or disorder can be experienced in different ways by different people. It can also be a fine line between what’s normal and what isn’t. Stress, for example, isn’t necessarily a mental health problem in itself; our busy lives mean it’s inevitable that we all experience it from time to time. But when it starts to interfere with everyday life, that’s when it becomes a problem.
We’ve had lots of women come to us for a potential solution to reducing stress levels, and they’re part of a growing number of people who swear by taking CBD for stress. In fact, CBD’s ability to help manage stress and a host of other complaints is among the driving factors behind the massive growth in demand for CBD that looks set to continue into this new decade. In fact, it’s predicted that CBD sales will reach a staggering $1.8 billion by 2022, with 14% of US adults now saying they use CBD products.
2. Mind/body unity: creating the right environment for health and happiness
Buzzwords such as “wellness” and “self-care” are all the rage these days, but what do they actually mean in practice? For us, wellness is about more than downloading a meditation app or lighting a candle. In 2020, we believe it’s about holistic wellbeing: creating the right environment for life, work and sleep.
We believe that means minimising stress, maximising self-care and focusing first and foremost on nurturing human relationships. It means embracing the fact that our bodies and minds don’t exist in isolation from each other: they’re intimately linked. Your gut health, for example, affects your mental health, while your stress levels affect your skin and metabolism. 2020 is going to be all about embracing experiences - and foods - that take into consideration both mind and body.
On a related note, we’re pleased to see the importance of sleep being championed as part of this growing interest in wellness and self-care. We’ve experienced the debilitating effects of sleep deprivation first-hand - something that taking CBD for sleep has helped us keep at bay - and understand all too well how a restful night’s sleep is instrumental in being happy and healthy when we’re awake. If you make one New Year’s Resolution for 2020, getting more sleep is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.
3. Digital detox: stopping screen time spiralling out of control
On the subject of sleep, one factor that can impact your sleep quality and quantity is too much screen time before bed. The nation’s smartphone addiction shows no sign of abating, with the average person glued to their phone for nearly three hours a day. The consequences of smartphone addiction are alarming considering how many of us suffer from it: sleep deprivation, anxiety, attention deficit disorder, not to mention all sorts of unfortunate accidents caused by being distracted by a mobile phone. And the list goes on.
It’s little wonder, then, that the concept of the digital detox has been slowly coming to the fore over the last few years as more of us take drastic measures to limit our screen time, even for relatively short periods of time. A survey in 2018 found that one in five of us have taken a digital detox, a move highlighted as a “millennial trend” most prevalent among those aged 25-34.
You don’t have to go completely cold turkey to feel the benefits of reducing the time you spend on your phone in 2020. The same survey found that people use numerous different ways of switching off, including:
- “App Cleanse: 37% have deleted an app or program in the past month
- Mini Detox: 35% take short breaks for hours at a time
- Digital Diet: 27% have limited their digital intake to emails or other routine activities
- Notification Cut: 24% have switched off notifications or emails
- On the Couch: 23% have moved their phones out of the bedroom” Source
Disengaging with our smartphones, even for limited periods of time, allows us to reconnect with the real world: with friends and family, with the outdoors, and most importantly with ourselves. And that goes back to the idea of mind/body unity and creating for yourself the right environment for you to thrive. There’s another New Year’s Resolution: less screen time, more ‘me’ time.
4. Clean eating: because beauty comes from the inside
More and more of us are thinking more about what’s in our food, and while clean eating isn’t exactly a new thing for 2020 (as evidenced by influencers such as Deliciously Ella and the Hemsley sisters), it’s a trend we expect to see continued interest in this year - not just for its benefits to our bodies, but because we’re increasingly recognising the benefits of a good diet on mental health as well.
Cutting down on sugar is a great example of a simple measure more people are taking, but as we go into 2020 we’ll see more people embracing the benefits of clean eating and cutting down potential exposure to harmful substances such as pesticides and preservatives. Fresh, seasonal, organic produce is the order of the day, picked up as locally as possible.
Interestingly, veganism is on the rise, particularly in the wake of the Netflix documentary The Game Changers, which met with unexpected popularity when it highlighted the benefits of a plant-based diet. It’s a trend helped by initiatives such as Veganuary and the fact that the plant-based alternatives are getting better and better; there’s even, famously, a Greggs vegan sausage roll. In the UK, sales of beef and pork have plummeted as hundreds of thousands of people went vegan or cut back on animal products for at least a month.
The clean eating and veganism movements can be linked with a wider move towards being conscious of our personal impact on the world around us, as well as the effects of chemicals and other toxins on ourselves. For example, we’ve seen a huge growth in interest around how plastic affects the environment since that episode of Blue Planet II. We’re now more aware of where produce has come from, the air miles it’s taken to reach us, and what it’s packaged in. Sustainability has become more than a buzzword; it’s become a way of life for many more people, egged on by the likes of Greta Thunberg.
This awareness has extended to what we’re putting in our bodies, particularly with the threat of microplastics to human health having been highlighted. It’s another reason why more people are turning to natural remedies such as CBD rather than drugs for managing pain, stress and sleep disorders.
5. Know thy brand: what’s in your cosmetics?
It’s not just about what we’re putting in our bodies; it’s about what we’re putting on them. Hand in hand with clean eating is another emerging trend that’s gaining more momentum all the time: clean beauty. Make-up, moisturiser, perfume, shampoo and all manner of other cosmetic products have come under the spotlight as a result of this trend, a niche interest that’s now hit the mainstream.
It’s a trend fuelled by “regulatory oversight” in the US cosmetics industry, which has allowed the presence of harmful substances in some personal care products. According to Harvard Health Publishing, “The majority of these chemicals fall into one or more of three major categories: irritants or allergens; potential endocrine disruptors (substances that may imitate our body’s natural hormones and interfere with normal signaling of these chemical messengers); and potential carcinogens (cancer-causing agents).”
Sounds alarming, doesn’t it? It’s why it’s always a good idea to scrutinise the ingredients list of the cosmetics you’re buying, or to buy from brands you trust. 6. Healthy ageing: older, wiser and just as beautiful
Whether you hope to age gracefully or grow old disgracefully, another emerging trend is the idea of healthy ageing as opposed to anti-ageing. It often feels as though we’re bombarded by products and treatments designed to make us look younger and ‘defy the symptoms of ageing’, but now there are more of us embracing ageing with a new, much more positive light.
As Nigella Lawson pens her thoughts on the joy of turning 60, older role models such as Dame Helen Mirren are showing us that getting older doesn’t mean getting any less sexy, while some publications have been banning the term ‘anti-ageing’ for some time now. We reckon this fits in nicely with what we believe we’ll see being talked about in the coming year - mental health, holistic wellness - as healthy ageing is about appreciating our bodies and embracing our imperfections. Wrinkles, for instance, are signs of life experience rather than something to be ashamed of; we’re embracing a lived-in body, accepting that as we grow older and wiser, grey hair and fine lines are all par for the course.
